Parasta syksyssä

Luonnon mielettömät värit. Uudet, pitkät sukat. Yhteisneulonta. Kuuma kaakao. Siinäpä on syksyn parhaimpia paloja.

Olen yleensä huono tarttumaan erilaisiin KALeihin, eli yhteisneulontoihin. Aina on jokin syy miksi jättää väliin. Ei ole oikeanlaisia lankoja kotona. En tiedä onko malli mieluinen ja vaivan arvoinen. Ja yleisin syy on se kiire. En minä millään ehdi neuloa muiden tahdissa. Tämä Niina Laitisen syysmalli vei kuitenkin minut täysin mennessään. Kerrankin kotona oli täydelliset langat odottamassa juuri tällaista projektia. Aikaa ei ehkä ollut mielettömästi, mutta päätin sitä olevan juuri tarpeeksi. Aloitin sukat kolme päivää myöhässä mutta sain loppua kohden melkein kirittyä kiinni. Sukat valmistuivat lopulta vain yhden päivän myöhässä.

Kaikki langat ovat jämiä erilaisista projekteista. Keltaiset ja liila ovat jämiä isosta kasvivärjätystä peitostani. Muut ovat jämiä erilaisista pipoista, lapasista ja yhdestä villaliivistäkin. Jämäsukkia neuloessa ja katsellessa onkin mielestäni hauska muistella myös kaikkia muita projekteja matkan varrelta.

Koska jotkut langat olivat hieman 7 Veljestä ohuempia, ei sukkien leveydessä ole yhtään ylimääräistä. Päinvastoin niiden pukeminen päälle on vielä tässä vaiheessa hieman hankalaa, kun nilkka ottaa kiinni kantapään yli vedettäessä. Mutta luotan siihen että villalangat venyvät hieman käytössä! Ja jalassa sukat kuitenkin tuntuvat hyviltä.

What I like the most in the autumn is the absolutely beautiful colours of the nature. And inspired by all those lovely colours, I took part in a KAL for autumn socks. I usually don't participate in KALs since I rarely have the time for it and usually I don't even have the right kind of yarn at home. But this time everything just clicked. Leftover yarns just waiting for a project like this. Just enough time to finish the socks in time and a pattern that just screamed out my name. The result is perfect.

Kesäloma tuli ja meni. Blogissa oli hiljaista. Mutta huomenna tämä opettaja palaa töihin ja blogillenikin suon varmasti tästä eteenpäin taas enemmän huomiota. Viimeisen lomapäiväni kunniaksi näyttäisin teille nyt kuvia tämän vuoden suurimmasta projektistani. Aloitin virkkaamisen marraskuussa ja viime perjantaina sain sen vihdoinkin valmiiksi.

Malli: Spice of Life Blanket (keskiosa) ja Virkattu Torkkupeitto Novita Syksy 2013 (tilkut)

Tämä torkkupeitto on mitoiltaan 135 cm leveä ja 205 cm pitkä ja painaa huimat 1,6 kg! Kaikki langat ovat minun itse kasvivärjäämiä lankojani. Kasvivärjätyt langat ovat väreiltään ehkä maailman ihanimpia! Niin kauniita ja luonnonläheisiä mutta silti värikkäitä. Lisää tietoa itse langoista löydät täältä, täältä ja täältä. Kutakin väriä minulla oli useimmissa tapauksissa vain 50g tai 100g.  Eli mitään isompaa yksiväristä projektia en voinut niistä tehdä. Tämä peittoprojekti osoittautuikin täydelliseksi näille langoille.Valitsin aina lennosta yhden värin kerralla ja jatkoin mallikertaa niin pitkään kuin erivärisiä lankoja riitti. Jämistä virkkasin vielä noin 92 pientä ruutua, joista tein boordin peiton ympärille. Ruudut kiinnitin virkkaamalla.

Ruutuja on viittä erilaista. Joka toinen ruutu on ihan tavallinen isoäidinneliö. Joka toinen taas yksi neljästä erimallisesta ruudusta Novitan torkkupeitosta. Ja arvatkaapas mitä? Tietääkseni peitosta ei löydy kahta samanlaista ruutua. Kaikki ovat väritykseltään erilaisia keskenään. Silti kokonaisuus on mielestäni onnistunut. Siinä on toki väriä ja vilskettä, mutta koska kaikki värit sopivat yhteen, on lopputulos silti yhtenäinen ja silmää miellyttävä.

Peiton mallikertaa toistin lähes kolme kertaa. Viimeisestä mallikerrasta jäi ihan muutama rivi puuttumaan. Tässä kuva yhdestä mallikerrasta:

Kaikista näistä langoista saan kuitenkin kiittää ihanaa entistä työpaikkaani Talomuseo Glimsiä. Ollessani siellä töissä, pääsin monena kesänä värjäämään lankoja museon tapahtumissa. Ilman Glimsiä minulla ei siis nyt olisi ihanan värikästä, iloista ja lämmintä torkkupeittoa talven kylmiä iltoja varten. Tästä syystä kävin myös paikan päällä Glimsissä kuvaamassa peittoni blogiani varten. Mikäs sen parempi ympäristö kuin lankojen värjäyspaikka? Mikäli Glims on teille vielä tuntematon paikka, suosittelen lämpimästi sitä retkikohteena. Siellä pääsee nauttimaan maaseudun rauhasta ja kivoista tapahtumista keskellä Espoon vilskettä.

It is done! My big blanket entirely made out of naturally dyed yarn. I've dyed all of the yarn myself while working at the Glims Farmstead Museum before becoming a teacher. All of these pictures are also taken at Glims.

The blanket turned out quite big: 135cm wide and 205 cm long and it weights around 1,5 kg! I repeated the pattern from the Spice of Life Blanket almost three times. Then I added a border made out of 92 small squares. Every other square is a good old granny square, every other is one of four small squares from the Novita blanket pattern (both patterns listed above).

Taas on yksi keskeneräinen valmistunut. Tai ainakin melkein. Kun alkuvuodesta lähdin mukaan Kevään keskeneräiset -haasteeseen, olin päättänyt tehdä tämän peiton näin pitkälle. Peiton edetessä, aloin kuitenkin kaipaamaan siihen raitojen lisäksi jotakin muuta: virkattuja tilkkuja. Joten vaikka peitto on nyt käyttövalmis, on se saavuttanut vasta ensimmäisen etappinsa. Toinen etappi koostuu noin 80:ä pienestä tilkusta, jotka valmistunevat kesän aikana.

Peiton kanssa poseeraa viikon verran meillä hoidossa ollut Kiira. Otan tästä myös myöhemmin parempia kuvia, koska minulla on aivan erityinen paikka mielessäni, jossa haluaisin peiton kuvata. Lisää siis seuraa...

I finally completed this blanket - or at least almost. This is how far I wanted to get this spring during the UFO-challenge I participate in. The blanket is already in use, but is still waiting for the finishing touch: about 80 small squares to form a border around it. I hope to be able to finish them during this summer.

These aren't the last pictures you'll see of this blanket, though. I have a very special place in mind where I want to take the rest of the pictures. So stay tuned for more! The cat in the pictures is called Kiira and lived with us for a week.

Almost 100% made by me

Huhtikuu oli täällä blogissa hyvin hiljainen kuukausi. Potesin ensin pitkää flunssa ja sen jälkeen vielä vatsatautia, joten sekä blogi että käsityöt saivat jäädä odottelemaan parempia aikoja. Toivottavasti selvitään tästä loppukeväästä nyt paremmin! :)

Näidin viimepäivien ihanien helteiden kunniaksi voisinkin esitellä sopivasti viimeisille pakkasille valmistuneen villahameen:

Malli on hyvin yksinkertainen mutta erityisen tästä sekee se, että kudoin tämän kankaan ihan itse. Kävin ihan käistyöopettajaopintojeni loppuvaiheessa vaatetuskangas-kurssin, ja päätin siellä kutoa itselleni lämpimän villakankaan talvimekkoa varten. Tämä keltainen raitakangas on vain pieni osa tätä kangasta. Samasta loimesta kudoin myös noin 1,5m tällaista ruutukangasta syksyn väreissä:

Siitä tullee joskus mielettömän lämpöinen mekko, kunhan ensin uskallan upottaa siihen sakseni. Tätäkin pientä hametta oli jo kuumottava tehdä. Tämä kangas on kova purkautumaan, joten ommellessa piti olla todella varovainen ja tarkka.

Kankaaseen olen käyttänyt Kamenaa ja Ohutta Pirkkalankaa eri sävyissä. Keltaisen langan olen itse värjännyt värjäyskurssilla. Eli toisin sanoen tämä hame on lähestulkoon 100% minun tekemäni. Alusta loppuun. Hurjan hauskaa!! :)

This is a skirt made almost 100% by me. I've woven the fabric myself and dyed the yellow yarn myself. All during my wonderful craft studies at the university. This skirt was only for practise, though. I made another fabric too (in the loom-picture above), a much bigger one using more red and orange colours. That fabric will hopefully turn into a nice and wonderfully warm winter dress sometime in the future. The fabric is really tricky to sew as it's so slipery and so delicate. Therefor I started with this simple skirt and will move on to the dress another time. Wish me luck! :)

Torkkupeitto kasvivärjätyistä langoistani etenee hyvää vauhtia. Mutta vielä ei langoille näy loppua... Ehkä ihan hyvä niin, lankakulho olohuneessa näyttää aika kivalta! :)

I've already come pretty far on my blanket! But there's still a lot of naturally dyed yarn left... Perhaps it's a good thing, the bowl filled with yarn actually look pretty nice! :)

Summersoups

Here's the result of some dyeing I did during the summer at my old job:

The three on the left are all dyed with violet lupin flowers. The yellow ones are dyed with onion and the red ones with a mixture of cochineal and madder. The striped one used to be a yarn in the french colours bleu-blanche-rouge, but I think it looks much, much better this way! Aluna was used for all of these soups.

There's also a small apricot- or salmon-coloured ball of yarn in the front. That's a silk-alpaca yarn dyed with japanese safflower. It's used for dying silk and gives both yellow and pink shades. If you're interested to know more about how it worked out for us, take a look at this blog kept by one of my old colleagues. There's also a bit more information about the lupins.

Here's another thing I learned this past summer:

I spun my first skeins of yarn! And everything is made from scratch. The sheep is called Elviira (in the middle of the picture below, picture by Espoon kaupunginmuseo) and I helped shearing here, then I carded the wool by hand and finally spun it into yarn. Can't wait to start knitting something out of it!

 

Uh, remember me?

Sorry!! I know I've been quite absent for the last few months. The truth is I kind of lost my inspiration to knit or do any other kind of handicrafts. So there wasn't really that much to update. I might have done something every once in a while, but I actually haven't finished any bigger projects since I don't know when. But now I think - or at least hope! - I've found my sparkle again! So maybe - just maybe! - I'll be able so show you something bigger soon.

This is a project I finished already quite some time ago, but I just never got around posting it here on the blog.

Pattern for the socks: Punaiset pitsisukat from Novita Sukkalehti

Yarn: Novita Wool, dyed with cochineal
Needles: 2 mm

I heard a rumour that a little 1-year-old girl needed a new pair of socks, so I thought these lace socks would be a nice accessory for a little princess. I had to slightly modify the pattern, though, since it was written for adult sizes only. But here's what I did:

CO 40 st
Repeat the lace pattern 5 times around the sock and make the lace edge 3 repeats wide. Then I continued pretty much following the pattern by doing one lace stripe in the front and a k2p2 ribbing at the back, just adapting it for my number of stitches in stead.

Then I also wanted to make a pair of mittens to go with the socks. Those I just knitted without any real pattern, casting on 40 st and doing a k2p2 rib for about 6 cm. Then I continued knitting the rest of the mittens in stiped stockinette stitch, placing a thumb when the mitten measured 3 cm (not including the rib). The whole mitten measures about 7 cm (not including rib).

Hope they suited that cute little princess!

Finally, something for ME! It feels like I've only been knitting projects after projects for other people, so it felt really, really good to finish something that was meant for myself.

Remember when I went through my stash last summer and said you'd probably see a lot of stash-eating project from now on? Well, you haven't really seen that many, have you? But here's at least one! (That consumed both all of the white yarn and all of the lighter gray)

Pattern/Idea: Isoäidinneliö kauluri by Novita
Hook: 4 mm
Yarn: Novita 7 Veljestä, Gjestal Janne, Novita Princess Baby and some random white yarn from my stash.

Well, you don't really need a pattern for this one, but I got the idea from the pattern listed above. All you need is the amount of squares you want and then just crochet them together! I made 40 smaller ones to make a loooong cowl. This one is so long you can wrap it once, twice or even three times around your neck - depending on how wrapped up you want to be!

It kind of looks small now that it's finished, but while I worked on it, it seemed like just another never-ending project. The main reason for why I actually managed to finish this was all thanks to school. As the brainless project this was, it was absolutely perfect for having with you during lessons! Whithout all the lessons at the uni last spring, I think I'd still be crocheting those squares...

But do you really think I learnt my lesson? Oh no. After finishing one patchwork project, I started even a bigger one! But that, my friends, I don't think I'll be able to show you here for yet a very, very long time... But here's a little hint and a sneakpeak: natural dyes and...
