Häähuumaa

Blogissa on ollut hiljaista, ja tässä ainakin suurin syy kevään ja kesän hiljaisuuteen:

Menimme heinäkuussa rakkaan mieheni kanssa naimisiin!

Päätimme jo aikaisessa vaiheessa, että halusimme pienehköt, rennot häät. Ja sellaiset saimmekin! Ja vielä oikein kotikutoiset! Juhlapaikkana toimi V:n lapsuudenkoti Espoossa ja vihkipaikkana sen lähipuisto. Kaikki oli kotitekoista, aina ruuasta, koristeista jopa häämekkooni asti. Olihan siinä paljon hommaa, mutta olen erittäin tyytyväinen lopputulokseen. Päivä oli juuri sellainen kuin olimme toivoneet!

Matkalla ottamaan hääkuvat ennen vihkimistä. Korvissa TitiMadamin kauniit kultaiset bambit. Myös sulhasella oli TitiMadamin pieni kultainen pupu takissaan. Ihanan Marimekon laukun sain V:ltä viikkoa aikaisemmin syntymäpäivälahjana. Kyllä hän minut hyvin tuntee <3 Kaulassani roikkuu pieni kultainen sydän. Ukkini on sen aikoinaan antanut mummilleni lahjaksi ja äiti piti samaa korua kaulassaan omana hääpäivänään. Ajatella miten iso ja kaunis tarina voi noinkin pienellä ja vaatimattomalla korulla olla!

Häämekkoani varten kävin ostamassa valkoisen kankaan jo helmikuussa. En halunnut olla myöhään liikeellä, mutta menihän siinä kuitenkin niin, että viimeistelin viimeisiä yksityiskohtia vielä pari päivää ennen h-hetkeä! Tyypillistä!

Ompelin ensin lakanakankaasta erilaisia protoversiota, joiden pohjalta muokkasin kaavoja. Hameosan kaavan piirsin itse youtuben avulla, yläosan kaavan pohjana käytin Kotilieden kästyö -lehden 1/2015 hääpuvun korsettia, jota loppujen lopuksi muokkasin aika paljon. Yläosan protoja tein 4 kpl, ja senkin jälkeen olisi vielä jäänyt säädettävää. Johonkin kohtaan oli kuitenkin pakko vetää raja ja siirtyä tehtävässä eteenpäin.

Valkoinen satiini sekä pitsinauhat (vyötäröllä ja helmassa) ovat Eurokankaasta, mutta tuon ihanan auringonkeltaisen pitsikankaan löysin UFFista vasta toukokuussa. Kyseessä on kaksi vanhaa pitsiverhoa, jotka siis saivat uuden elämän häämekossani. Oli toisaalta vaikea päätös leikata ne palasiksi, koska olisin milloin tahansa huolinut ne myös verhoiksi...

Myös tällainen pieni salaisuus löytyy sekä mekon helmasta että sulhasen solmion takaa. Tämä taisi mennä kaikilta vierailtamme ohi :)

Boleron neuloin Dropsin ihanasta Lace-langasta, joka on 70% alpakkaa sekä 30 % silkkiä. Ohjeena tähän käytin Matrimonio boleroa. Tätäkin muokkasin jonkin verran, ja tarkat muistiinpanot siitä löytyvät Ravelrysta. Muuten olen tyytyväinen bolerooni, mutta se jäi harmillisesti ihan muutaman sentin liian lyhyeksi selästä, kun häämekkoni on siitä kohtaa niin matala. Mutta muiden mekkojen kanssa se istuu onneksi hyvin.

Perinteitä kuunnioittaen virkkasin meille myös modernin version vihkiryijystä. Ohje tähän matton löytyy täältä, hieman muokattuna. Keltaiset kukat olivat muuten mekkoni ja vihkimattomme lisäksi läsnä myös vihkitilaisuuden jälkeen perinteisen riisin korvikkeena. Jokainen vieras sai käteensä keltaisen kukan, josta he repivät terälehtiä ja heittivät niitä päällemme riisin sijaan. Tämä pieni mutta tärkeä yksityiskohta oli yksi hääjuhlamme suosikeistani, jota voin lämpimästi suositella.

Tässä vielä kuva taitavan kälyni tekemästä kauniista kampauksestani! Katossa näkyy myös pieni osa niistä kymmenistä keltaisista, valkoisista ja kullanvärisistä viirinauhoista jota ompelin koristeiksi taloon ja juhlatelttoihin. Näistä ja muista koristeista ehkä vielä myöhemmin lisää.

As you can see above, the main reason for why this blog has been so quiet lately is that me and Mr V got married this summer! We had a smallish, very casual wedding. Nearly everything was homemade, including the food, the decorations and even my wedding dress. The wonderful yellow fabric in my dress is actually two lace curtains that I found in a secind hand shop. Both the colour and the flower pattern are so sunny and beautiful that I just couln't resist.

I also made a wedding rug for us to stand on during the ceremony and lots and lots of flags to decorate the house with. But more about those decorations later. My bolero is that all so popular Matrimonio bolero, but I've made a few adjustments and those notes can be found on my Ravelry page.

Kankaan hamstrasin itselleni jo Lapsimessuilla keväällä, mutta se sai monen muun kankaan tavoin odottaa muutama kuukausi kaapissa ennen kuin iskin sen kimppuun. Kaava ja pituus ovat tosiaankin samat kuin tässä mekossa. Ainoa ero on mintunvihreät isot taskut. Ja onpa muuten kätevät! Niihin saa survottua vaikka mitä! Ihanaa!

Bordeauxissa oleillessamme kävimme toietenkin myös tutustumassa paikallisiin viinitarhoihin ja St. Emilionin kylään. Opimme paljon uutta viineistä ja niiden valmistuksesta. Vinkkinä voisin kertoa, että kannattaa kaupassa katsoa viinipullojen etikettiä. Jos siinä on kuvattu Chateauxin, eli viinitilan päärakennus, on se luultavasti sen tilan niin kutsutta "ykkösviiniä".

Ensi kerralla sitten taas lankajuttuja luvassa! :)

I made another dress for our trip to Bordeaux using the same pattern as for this one. The fabric is called Salmiakki by PaaPii. The only difference to the first dress is those wonderful, big pockets. They are just so convenient! Love them! This time I posted some photos from the wineries we visited and the town of St. Emilion.

Kuvat on otettu Bordeauxissa, jossa vietimme 10 päivää heinäkuun alussa. Suurin syy lähteä reisuun oli jalkapallon EM-kisat, mutta näimme toki paljon muutakin. Bordeauxin kaupunki on pieni ja suloinen. Hyvin ranskalainen mutta myös hyvin turistiystävällinen. Kaupungin kuvatuin paikka on varmasti Place de la Bourse, jonka edessä on vedestä koostuva peili, johon rakennukset heijastuvat. Todella upea paikka pimeällä!

Kävimme myös Arcachonin mahtavilla hiekkadyynellä, Dune de Pilat. Kuvat eivät koskaan yllä samalle tasoille kuin aito kokemus, mutta kyseessä oli siis 150 m korkea ja 3 km pitkä hiekkadyyni, jonka toisella puolella oli meri ja toisella puolella mäntymetsä. Huikea paikka!

Ja olihan se myös ensimmäinen reissumme kesäkuisen kihlautumisemme jälkeen... <3

Yes, I've also been sewing. Especially during my summer holidays. The pattern for this dress in from Suuri Käsityö 5-6/2015, but I've made it a bit shorter. The fabric is from lovely Verson Puoti and is called Paratiisi-Maija. All of the pictures were taken in Bordeaux, where we spent 10 days in July. A really nice and beautiful city! We also visted the Dune of Pilat in Arcachon. If you haven't been there yet, you definately should! It's really a breathtaking place! ...And yes, we got engaged in june! <3

Christmas comes and goes

You'd think you had more time to blog during the Christmas holidays! But no, this is the first time I've not been knitting like a maniac to finisih all the presents, or been somewhere else than home or not being too sick and tired to even think about blogging. But here it goes. My big Christmas special. Just a little bit late.

Just one day before Christmas Eve I suddenly noticed that the elves had finally finished all the handmade Christmas presents. How do I know this? Well, they had left them all in a big pile on the kitchen floor, ready to the wrapped. And man those elves had time to finish a lot of gifts this year! This teaching job really seems to suit me! ...or, the elves, I mean. They seem to have a lot more time to knit nowadays...

So this is what I'll be blogging about for a while. That big pile. First thing tomorrow. I promise!

Eternal sunshine

When I finished my craft studies at the university last spring, my friends gave me gift cards to two different yarnshops in Helsinki: one to Menita and one to Snurre. I have to say that this was a brilliant present for me. I've promised myself that I'll try not to buy more yarn before I've used at least half of what I aldready have. But once you have a gift card with an expiration date, you just have to use it, right? Oh, that's just too bad...

People have been talking a lot about the yarns by Louhittaren Luola (Knitlob's Lair) so I wanted to try a skein too. After fiddling around with a lot of different skeins I ended up buying Väinämöinen in colour Vilja.

At first it seemed like the yarn was just a little bit too thick for this pattern, but I think it turned out just perfect anyway. I wanted a soft but warm shawl for the autumn, and that's exactly what this is. The yarn was soft and really easy to knit. I wish the colour had had just a little bit less orange in it, but I guess it's ok after all. The different shades of yellow and orange gives the shawl a lively and interesting look.

This wasn't exactly the easiest shawl I've knitted. Especially the textured top part required some thinking but it didn't take me too long to get the hang of it. The lace edge was easy and wonderful to knit.

The shawl eventually ended up just two rows short since I ran out of yarn, but I don't think it messed up the pattern at all. The rays of sunshine just ended up a little bit shorter than in the original version. Hope they'll still inspire the real sun to shine throughout the summer!

Winds of change

There's been a lot going on over the past month. Some stuff that will affect this blog. As you can see, I changed the name of the blog. It will from now on be called "ME made". I'm sure all of you agree on that this is a good change. The old name "The Comet" didn't really represent the things this blog has become. It didn't bring your minds to knitting and crafting. It had basicly just been hanging around since the beginning, when this started out as a travel blog back when I was an exchange student in Paris in 2009. And now it was time to update it.

Edit: This is the new blog. I've copied all of my handicraft-related posts here to make a nice archive. The old blog will go back to be called The Comet and will only have the posts from my spring as an exchange student in Paris back in 2009. The old blog can be found here. 

But then why ME made, you might think? Well, ME stands for my initials M.E. and since this blog is all about handmaking things... Well, it clicks kind of perfectly, don't you think? I will change the URL for this blog too, but don't worry. I'll give you a heads up before I do.

Also, I am now happy to inform you that I also registered my own firm with that very same name. Don't really know where that's heading yet, but there might be some visible changes in the blog due to that too. In the future. Right now I'm just starting out by selling some handmade things to the museum shop at the Espoo City Museum where I work at the moment.

Which brings me to my next announcement. The fact is, I won't be working there for long. You see, I've been offered a permanent job as a craft teacher at a high school here in Helsinki! I'll start in August. And that's like... I don't know. So amazing! But in the same time so scary to start a new job! And there's a lot to plan before school starts in the autumn. I'm super excited about it. I have loads of ideas of what I could do with my students but it's still quite hard to picture what it will really be like. Will it be hard? Will it be fun? Will it be awful or absolutely great? I don't know. Time will tell!

I also hope that I'll still have both time and inspiration to do my own crafts outside work and to keep up with this blog. At least I'll try my best, I promise! But please be patient with me and hang in there, ok?

Holding hands in New York, New York...

We like going out for walks. And we like holding hands when we walk. And now our winter walks are finally much more comfortable.

Pattern: Valentine mittens + Owls In a Tree Mittens
Yarn: Austermann Alpaca Silk (green) and A.P.D.O.O. Alpaka (raspberry red)
Needles: 3 mm

I also happened to finish all these mittens just before we went on a family vacation to the U.S., starting in New York. How convenient! Finally some new backgrounds in my pictures! :) These (not the snowy ones) were taken just outside Rockefeller Center.

The funny thing is that I didn't think I'd find a colorchart that would have both an owl and a tree in it. You know, to match our individual mittens. But then I just decided to type it in the search field of Ravelry - just for fun! - and there it was! Amazing! But I had to re-draw and  modify it a bit to make it fit the Valentine mittens. But still. It's crazy how you can find almost everything on the internet!

Pattern: Cruiser by Caylin Meyer
Yarn:  Austermann Alpaca Silk
Needles: 3 mm

These mittens were a piece of cake. I just followed the pattern for that largest size, and that was it. The yarn is so incredibly soft with its alpaca and silk, but at the same time, they're not the warmest of mittens. Guess I'll have to make a pair of warmer ones soon.

Yarn: A.P.D.O.O. Alpaka
Needles: 3 mm 

My own mittens were more tricky. Yes, there's a lot of patterns for owl mittens, but none of them were made for yarn this thin. Plus, I didn't want to work purled sticthes over the whole front of the mitten. So eventuelly I ended up just winging it. I tried to write down some notes, though, in case I ever want to make these again. So here you are:

Mossy Owl Mittens:

CO 40 st and work a k2p2 rib for 5 cm. Increase 4 st after the rib.
The rest of the mitten: work moss stitch on the front side and stockinette stitch on the back side.
Knit 3 cm in moss/stockinette stitch. Then start working the owl in the middle of the right side like this: 5 st moss stitch, 12 stitches for the owl, 5 st moss stitch.

Remember to leave a gap for the thumb on the back side!!

The owl:
rows 1-5: knit
row 6: C6B C6F
rows 7-17: knit (11 rows)
row 18: C6B C6F 
row 19: knit
rows 20-23: k2, p3, k2, p3, k2 
rows 24-27: k knit
row 28: C6B C6F
rows 29-30: knit

When the owl is done, continue working the mitten in moss/stockinette stitch until it’s about 5 cm shorter than you want it to be when it’s finished. Then start decreasing on the sides of the mitten on every second row like this:

Needle 1 and 3: k1, ssk, work till the end of the needle
Needle 2 and 4: work until 3 st remain, k2tog, k1

Continue the moss stitch on the front side for as long as possible.

Sew on eyes :)
